IIRC, everyone got a right to six months sabatical after a certain (not very high) number of years of employment in the company. But I don't think the company lasted long enough for anyone to actually take the sabatical.

But even outside of dot.com contracts, I don't think it's that hard to get six months or so every 3-5 years. The idea behind sabatical is that you're going to spend the time on something that you have a desire to work on and which is more or less related to what the company does (so only hiking probably isn't acceptable :-). And after you're back the company might profit from your sabatical, if the stars get aligned correctly.
