I have not used ASM in a while but when you add a disk to a diskgroup you trigger a rebalance operation. The rebalance can take hours depending on how many disks are in the diskgroup and the underlying speed of your physical disk. If you have multiple disks to add you should add then in a single operation so you rebalance all the disks at one time.

Check the manuals. You should be able to see if a rebalance is in effect.
