DB2 is a viable alternative for our main database. That discussion is still ongoing. I even suggested replacing Linux cluster with a single AIX mini which I believe could outperform 3 or 4 machines with quad-core AMD processors and 32GB RAM each, but I am not the person who signs the check. AIX is much more mature system, with extent based file system, defragmenters, good monitoring tools and alike. The last version that I worked with was AIX 5.4. I imagine that there was a new version or two since then.
