Oracle has figured out that they can make more money if they dismantle the community and just start selling things. The company that I work for, for instance, is not buying performance tuning and diagnostic packs because I can do that even without that. Same applies to the automatic tuning. It shouldn't come as a surprise that well educated and technologically versatile DBA 1.0 is considered an enemy, we're directly impacting their bottom line. I wish them all the luck in the world and will look for the new opportunities. I used to be a fairly well respected VAX/VMS system administrator, I've seen this before. This doesn't mean that Oracle will end up the same way as DEC, they probably will not because Oracle seems to be very solid financially, it only means that I have lost my interest for Oracle and their technology. Having gone through this type of company transformation twice, I suspect that there must be a point in the life of the company when the company stops being driven by geeks like Ken Jacobs, Cary Millsap or Steven Feuerstein and starts being driven by financial and marketing guys who don't understand and do not value the kind of technological community the company has built. My experience also teaches me that there will be some type of catharsis relatively soon after such transformation takes place.
