Thanks for your replies and suggestions.

prstat -t showed that the BMC Patrol process is taking 25% of memory and CPU so I'm going along to see the Patrol team today.

It is a wee machine, but it's a relic of an application that the vendors can't/won't certify with 10g so we're stuck with 9i for the time being, all other databases for this client having been migrated to x86-64 zones with oodles of memory and cpu ...
