Remember HW/SAN mirroring technologies requires similar or same hardware at the DR site. So you are potentially "locked" with one storage vendor (either with EMC or NetApp or IBM ..or) , but DG allows you to have a scaled down version of a (different) storage hardware to support the essential operations during DR failover. Also SAN mirroring is not continuously validated (means you will not know whether it will work or not till you open the database), where as DG is contunously validated (your datafiles and log files are validated continously by the recovery process and you can open the db in readonly and run some queries).
