Some people have scheduled jobs/procedures that do their own stats gathering at different intervals.

Some people let Oracle ( especially in 10g and beyond ) decide when to get new stats.

You can export out the old stats before implementing new sets.

It all depends ... on the standards in place at the shop in question.
