Use for what - checking the registry, or some alternative for tnsping?
Be aware, tns_admin may be defined in other places than the registry, too.
And tns_ping does not check the listener config, an attempt to
dummy connect (sqlplus s/s_at_your_tns_alias) should result in an
ora-01017 - that is a response from the instance you are trying
to connect to.
All other errors (tns/ora-121xx, 125xx) are network related
