" As I understand it, Oracle 7, if started with files in backup mode
after a
 crash or a SHUTDOWN ABORT, will assume media recovery is required."

Prior to 7.2, media recovery would have been necessary. Effective with 7.2, a simple

"alter database datafile "full path file name" end backup" ;

issued after the "media recovery needed messages" will take the file out of hot backup mode and allow you to then issue an "open".
