Just wanted to check, I too thought it was ancient too. I see that there were bugs regarding it in version 8 & 8i, but that's resolved and moot. Also researching docs in 10g on the parameter(I may be reading more into than I should but), even if you turn it off, Oracle may disregard the setting and turn it on anyway.
