I have successfully used OLEDB clients as old as 8.0.5 against an Oracle 10.2.0.2 database with minimal problems. If I recall correctly, I occasionally had difficulty with bind variables and/or retrieving more than one long raw column at a time with the older clients. Most of my clients are using the Oracle 8.1.7 client against Oracle 10.2.0.2 databases.
