Large tablespace in 8.17

Hi,
what might be the best way to create a large tablespace in 8.17 db ; -
should there be several datafiles
- first there's a upload made which gives that size approx ~8 -10 GB
- after that every insert adds another ~ 5 MB
Every hint for some basic values are beeing appreciated !
