From the article that you referred to:

"For other applications, Microsoft supports using the /3GB switch in Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition only in a production environment if the application vendor has tested in this environment and if the vendor is willing to support the customer who is using this functionality."

/3GB works for MS W2K3 Server Standard Edition and Oracle (database server) 10g R1 on 10.1.0.4, 10g R2 on 10.2.0.3. I don't remember having to change the image since the 8.1.7.3.0 patchset (way, way back).

/PAE is another matter which I am not sniping at in this post.
