11g client will do the trick, using the correct tnsnames.ora file pointing to the remote database - Have done this before without problems. You can only install thew client, no need for a full database install, except if you want to connect via a dblink using a local database, to get to the remote database, but from what I understand, you don't have a local database, so the client will do
