Jeremy, this is what I would do if it were me:

Find a way to extract the contents of the BLOB column to a file prior to the update
Do the update (to-CLOB, replace, to-BLOB)
Extract the BLOB to a file again under a different name
Run a binary diff tool like "bsdiff" and see what changed.
