you're right, of course. What you could do: if you run activeperl scripts from within a DOS box (command) you can unset the variable in this box (SET PERL5LIB=) and run your script(s). Unsetting an EV in a dos box is limited to the scope of that box and will not break Oracle.

Depending on how you use your Personal 10g database, I doubt if setting the variable to the new Pearl Directory will do any harm... but I wouldn't bet my mothly payment on it......
Anyway, 'broken' things could always be repaired by setting the variable back to its original value, but you're right: if you recognize the error as a consquence of the setting....
