This was actually started with Oracle 9i. The first 9i version was 9.0.1. But the second 9i version was 9.2.0 instead of 9.0.2. The joke was that the first patchset for 9iR2 would have been 9.0.2.1.0 and Oracle did not want a Beverly Hills database. The zip code 90210 is for Beverly Hills, CA.

The first 10g version was 10.1.0 and the second one was 10.2.0. Oracle is continuing this with 11g.
