Thanks for all the replies and lively discussions.

Thought I was going to be able to crack this nut simply, but it seems without opening up the security I cannot do it. Things would have been a lot simpler if the server was windows.

Seems that if I want to allow my users to use a client application without forcing them to enter a password, I have to somehow authenticate the machine they are on too, aswell as the username they are using.
Putting user/passwords in the app (via *.ini files) opens up the same security issues as setting remote_os_authent. If anyone can connect to the network, they can run the app and get access, regardless of username, which sounds worse security-wise than remote_os_authent=true.
