DISPLAY needs an ip address or a host name, I believe:

export DISPLAY=<host name or IP address>:0.0

As an example:

export DISPLAY=1.2.3.4:0.0
 -or-
export DISPLAY=myhost.mydomain.com:0.0

Also, as Sybrand noted, if this is a monochrome monitor you'll never pass the color test.
