My recommendation is to hit eBay and pick up a used NetApp, F810 or later. They are generally available for not much more than a good PC. Then you can have RAW, ASM, CFS, whatever you want and it is all the real deal.

Yes it will cost more than VMWare. But it will be the real thing. Just be sure to get one with GigE NIC cards.
