Same drive - yes. That is recorded in the control file of the database you made a backup of, and RMAN will try to read it in case of a restore.
In case your control file is lost, too, you obviously want to restore that from the backup, too (you do have control file autobackup set to ON, haven't you?)

For the practice, look up RMAN CLONE commands - it will let you do just that: restore to another server, location or name, or any combination.
