BATCH JOBS: PROTECTION OF USERNAME AND PASSWORD
Oracle Database 10g Release 2 introduces new functionality to
dramatically improve the security of batch jobs which use a username
and password to connect to the Oracle database. Historically, Oracle
Wallets have been used to manage PKI credentials for authentication to
the Oracle database. Starting with Oracle Database 10g Release 2,
Oracle Wallets can be used to store a username and password. This
enables a user to simply use a "/" to connect to the database, but
still authenticate using a username and password.
sqlplus /@prodapp
This new capability will address the issue with exposing username and
passwords on unix systems when executing the ps -ef command. This new
feature is also useful for jobs which need to connect from a middle
tier using a username and password and run a batch job within an
application schema.
