Hot Standby Question

We are in the process of setting up a hot standby database for an Oracle 8i application. The question I have is how would we be able to apply quarterly patches without having to re-create the stand by database every quarter.

We have found that the database needs to be taken out of read-only mode to apply the patch. However after the database is taken out of read-only mode, it can't be put back.

Is there a way to apply the patches without having to rebuild the database every quarter ?

Thank you.
