Thanks for the response, sorry for not supplying the relevant information.
The details are:

SQL> select * from v$version;

Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.1.0 - Prod PL/SQL Release 10.2.0.1.0 - Production
CORE 10.2.0.1.0 Production
TNS for 32-bit Windows: Version 10.2.0.1.0 - Production NLSRTL Version 10.2.0.1.0 - Production

I could upgrade, I only (re)installed yesterday, but I believe I also saw this problem with 10.2.0.2.0.

The buffer was originally set to 1024000. I have increased this but it has made no difference at all. It just seems like such a strange problem to me!
