Many good ideas here. It turns out that the non-written spec (i.e. mimic the existing code, whatever weird ass thing it does) calls for a strange criteria for trimming, so any canned function wouldn't have worked anyway.

Fortunately I've been able to adapt your ideas to mimic the behavior of the existing code using SQL instead of pages and pages of procedural goop.
