One slight correction, Sybrand:

"Too many people coming from a *Microsoft* background don't read any documentation at all", surely ;)

To the OP, Oracle also have provided a "2 Day DBA" manual which can make for slightly easier reading initially:

Although, once you've digested that, getting your teeth into the Tom Kyte books mentioned and Oracle's own "Concepts Guide" manuals should be your next port of call.
