I narrowed this down to a cookie problem. The error is in 
WWSSO_LS_PRIVATE.getcookie. Can not go any deeper, for this package is 
wrapped.


I have an alternative though: since your users are logged in to portal, 
there is no use in making the first pages public (unless you allow 
unauthenticated users in Portal accessing your portlet). Could you not  just 
change the first page  so that users will be authenticated through SSO? (If 
only for testing?)
