I have XE running on a W2K Pro, rarely use it, pound on the box all day with
x windows and the usual office apps. I've noticed when I do use XE, the startup
of anything, including sql*plus in a command box, is notoriously slow.

Since just about any other program such as Outlook or Excel does the same thing, I
think the finger should point at the OS. It may be as simple as an "optimization" to
keep memory available for programs that are actually being used. XE (and the EE I had
on more powerful boxes before it) just seems to be a bit worse than the others.

So I spend nearly all my time working on Oracle on unix boxes. The local PC is just a client
(or is that server for x?). It would be decent at that if it wasn't continually being assaulted by every script kiddie in spamworld and corporate monitoring programs.

I think it is just another aspect of being woken up after a nap.

Excellent suggestion. It's just such a trivial complaint...
