While we are looking things up, please note the Reference manual entry at http://download-east.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14237/initparams085.htm#sthref355 states:

"INSTANCE_TYPE specifies whether the instance is a database instance or an Automatic Storage Management instance."
