You need to, as usual, and as documented, use the 7.3.4 export using sqlnet against the 8.0.5 database.
The other way around won't work, ever. Running catexp7.sql in the 8.0.5 database is required, as you already noted. Just out of curiosity: in which museum is this configuration located?
