That is what I keyed on. This is a serious responsibility and no one buys an ERP system for $19.99. Some at the corporate level spent a lot of money and it is being put to risk. Likely by blind or short-sighted middle management.

Consider the number of jobs that get offshored when upper management looks at IT failures and determines their internal resources are not up to the task.

Do they ever interview the DBAs and ask why things are as they are? Of course not. They rely on middle management such as the Director of IT to answer the questions and that person is only interested in not taking personal the blame for failures. The very person who didn't give the OP the tools required to do a good job.

I probably should have railed against any IT Management putting a self-described noob in the position of doing it at all but that seemed self-evident.

And to train the new blood coming into the organization.

There is a lot of praise that should be given to organizations such as, for example, Dow Jones & Co. for making sure their people get the training they need to be successful.
