Not familiar with that one. Don't let the "expert" part of the title scare you. Tom Kyte is the expert but he writes and communicates at a level that everyone can understand.

Since I am not familiar with the other book I won't comment except to point out that the reviews on amazon.com for the "beginners guide" don't look very good.

When 10g first came out there is always a push for authors to get some stuff out to sell as quickly as possible. Sometimes the early books are the lowest quality.

If you really understand relational database design concepts well then transitioning from one to the other is fairly straightforward. But many SQL Server people as well as many oracle people don't have a firm grasp of the theory.
