An export is a logical backup. One needs a dependable physical backup for recovery. Both logical and physical backups have their uses. In normal Oracle usage, when a document says "backup the database" it means a physical backup. Only physical backups can be used to recover transactions, which is the normal end use for a backup. Please read the backup documentation, starting with the basics.

(This isn't meant as a slam on Daniel, just a clarification for the OP.  I presume what Daniel really meant was "don't rely solely on exports to backup your data," which is explicit in the docs http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/backup.102/b14192/intro001.htm#sthref13 )
