Hi Sybrand, just a comment on your helpful post.

The OP might have a 4 digit *varchar2* of 4231 and a 9 digit *varchar2* of 000004231. Further he raises the issue of leading zeroes but does not elaborate on their significance. According to your suggestion they would both be converted to *number* of 4231. I don't know his data - these leading zeroes may be significant.
