(Partly) replying to my own question:

  1. I noticed that on the "working" system, running /bin/rpm -qf /etc/redhat-release --qf "%{VERSION}\n" returns "4ES" (as opposed to "4AS").
  2. Copying the /etc/redhat-release file from the working system to the new one made runInstaller detect the right system and complete installation without any warnings.
