And the db host OS is...? (Yes, it can make a difference.) How exactly the connection "does not work?" What are the error messages you're receiving? The fact that the TNSPING works doesn't alone mean you can communicate with the service - only that you can communicate with the *listener* and it *knows about* the target service. If the database is not started up, the listener may still reply success to your ping if the SID is specified in the listener.ora's SID_LIST_<listener-name>. Pease give us more details on your environment, our crystal balls are dim today...
