Tom Kyte's book do discuss the architecture and how the engine works ... in detail. ( Don't quite understand how you can say you have the books and they don't cover that stuff ). The "now old 2001" book expert one-on-one oracle has something like (guessing) chapter 2 architecture chapter 3 concurrency chapter 4 transactions etc I believe. ( Rewritten and updated drastically probably in latest book ).

The oracle concept manuals at tahiti.oracle.com are also good starting points.

Tom has a new book out there that includes 10g and yes starts with all the architecture and engine stuff along with discussing concurrency and locking.

That is probably where you want to spend your time until ready to go farther. Cary Millsap's "Optimizing Oracle Performance" might be a good choice after that ( lots of excellent stuff at www.hotsos.com ) or a somewhat lighter approach is Gaja's "Oracle Performance Tuning 101".
