Just ran it in a non-RAC 10gR2 database after importing the tables. HW is HP-UX PA-RISC, with much smaller SGA configuration, but same EMC SAN storage. The trace and plan look very similar, however the response time is almost 1/2 . Also, there is no more REDO size in the 10gR2.

I can't say with any certainty if 10gR2 is THE reason, but if I believe what I read once about improved SORT in R2, then I have one more strong reason to upgrade.
