Please post a link to where MIke Ault talks about a babysitter. I used to be able to find them, but they seem to have disappeared about the time someone published a book about how to hire a dba. The babysitting point was one I disagreed with. Nothing wrong with babysitting databases, well-run shops don't have to be ulcer-inducing psychodramas.  I consider it a worthy goal to get from a mess to babysitting.

I agree, adequate SQL abilities are necessary. I'm not convinced super-duper SQL abilities are necessary, unless the DBA is directly involved with SQL development.
