Those are extremely useful when you design application badly, so that the children record are inserted before the parent record. I love applications designed around so called "object-relational mappers". Those applications are great examples of what not to do when designing an application on top of some RDBMS. Unfortunately, shooting application designers is illegal in most of the states of the Union.
