This generally means you are trying to read or write from a device that thinks it is another type of device, as when trying to access a plain file as though it was a disk device. However, I think in the contect of ORA-27047 it can have some other meanings, like a device is full or you lack read access or somewhere along the line bigfiles weren't set or something just ain't right. What is your platform, are the boxes identical, have you had other problems?
