I'm not sure why the error log doesn't show this error. I would downgrade to 8.1.7 *ASAP*, or better still : Get someone from Oracle in, or your database is probably toast. I would make sure you have consistent database, and a *cold* backup has been made, prior to proceeding any further. You should disregard nirav's advice, as that is dangerous: the database has never been upgraded to 9i, you don't know whether you have a consistent database, and the upgrade is likely going to fail hopelessly, and you'll get busted for it.
