I think it is a bad idea to both use delete input and having the OS delete some arcs.

I prefer to have only the OS delete the arcs. So I daily crosscheck before the backup, delete >3 day old arcs after the backup. This sort of redundancy has saved me several times (mostly dealing with standby db's, ie, network dies Friday eve 3 day weekend and no one tells me until Tuesday - still have backup of Friday arcs easily retrieveable on disk).
