Of course, the fact that undo tablespace auto-extended to 16GB means that something used up all that space. So, by shrinking the tablespace, he is more then likely to discover what exactly was it. This is so called "auditing by error": you mess up and find out who will scream. As you are very well aware of, disk space is the final frontier. By shrinking the undo tablespace he will boldly mess up what many have used before.
