Huge set of possible answers. Please explain the purpose of the question to help us understand what answers are relevant.

A friend works in the SAN industry, and it seems that the average [preventative maintenance] service he provides for disks is less than 2 minutes per disk per quarter - given the onboard diagnostics.

Unless, of course, you are asking about the average serviceable life span of a typical disk. In which case you want to ask your SAN vendor about MTBF.
