I need to move a datafile from one disk to another. I am running Oracle 9.2.0.4 on HP-UX11. I have done it before one a test system where I could control the access. We run SAP and in the test system I could make sure there were no users BUT SAP was still up. The datafile move went uneventful.

Now I need to do it to a production. What exactly happens if someone or something tries to access a table that is OFFLINE? This datafile move shouldn't take too long BUT I can't get 100% of the users out of SAP. Will thier transaction just fail? Hang? Get moved to the rollback/undo/whatever and wait for the table?

Thanks
Vince
