In that case you can access all archivelog files from all instances so you don't need to connect to the instances individually. Without ASM I normally use rman with the connect to ... in the allocate channel option to give each instance the possibillity to backup and maintain their own archives. Doing so also distributes the load over all nodes. This will normally not be that important since all io goes to the same shared device but it looks nice when you monitor the progress in netbackup ;-)
