Running on Unix/Linux might help you :)

It should work the way you described.

However
1) Open a case on Metalink
OR
Try increasing redo log sizes to like 100M each (you can drop new, bring back old size back later)
OR
Do not use default value for a column
.......
We use Oracle 8.1.7.4 and 9.2.0.6/7 on Solaris 2.7 and RH4 remove NSPAM to email Received on Wed Oct 19 2005 - 15:53:36 CDT
