Fabrice,

  1. your version is likely 8.1.7.4.x, not 8.1.7.1.4. if its in fact 8.1.7.1.4, it is extremely out of date - like > 3 years.
  2. The Oracle Universal Installer can provide information as to what components and patchsets (full patchsets) have been applied.
  3. one-off patches prior to those that relied upon opatch to be applied are not registered in the OraInventory.
  4. You need a support contract and Metalink access to obtain patches.
  5. check v$version in the database of interest.
  6. 8i R3 is off of support unless you have purchased Extended Maintenance Support. Upgrade to 9i R2 (and apply the 9.2.0.7 patchset and any relevant security fixes) or upgrade to 10g R1 (and apply the 10.1.0.4 patchset and any relevant security fixes).

You might invetstigate the "Center for Internet Security" http://www.cis.org for security tools. Also check out Pete Finnigan's site http://www.petefinnigan.com/weblog/entries/index.html

good luck.
