A correctly written program should not core dump under any circumstances, except extreme conditions like hardware failure. It is ok for a program to terminate with an error message if it encounters an error condition, but it is not ok to dump.

This is certainly a bug.

I would open a TAR - make sure that you include as much information as possible:

When the server has core dumped, upload the trace files and the core dump with the TAR.
